Jennifer Dewalt: Day 30: Nom Nom Nom
Silly KittyToday’s website is an adorable kitty that you can pet, feed and harass with no allergy side effects and no messy clean up!
I had a lot of fun making this little guy today. I employed some pretty neat CSS tricks to build the kitty. The tail was the hardest to get to look right….
Amor Y Amargo, a set on Flickr.
Getting schooled in bitters, liquors, and cocktails at Amor Y Amargo for Erin’s birthday. In addition to the lesson “curriculum” we were also invited to sniff or taste pretty much anything in the bar we wanted. Delicious madness!
- Carpano Antica. Served with 1 cube. Think vermouth is sticky-icky and mainly just for making Manhattans? Think again.
- Cocchi Americano. (Just a tiny taste.) Another aperitivo, more minerally than the Carpano Antica.
- Manhattan: Old Overholt Rye, Cocchi Americano, Angostura bitters.
- THE GIN FLIGHT / A Lesson In The 5 Categories of Gin: Bols Genever (caramel nose, really dry and funky); Old Tom Ransom (bright nose, very spicy, rye-ish, branchy, cinnamon, ginger); Beefeater London Dry (the “default” gin, the sweet juniper lavender flavor you automatically associate as gin-flavors); Plymouth Navy Strength (lighter mouthfeel, but with STABBING); Krahn New Style (very perfumey, rose, galangal, lemongrass).
- Martinez: Beefeater (should have been Old Tom but he was short); Cocchi Americano, Luxardo Maraschino, orange bitters, orange twist.
- Luxardo Maraschino, tiny taste, for science.
- Old Fashioned: Old Overholt Rye, sugarcane syrup, Angostura bitters, orange bitters. The Old Fashioned is the fundamental, original cocktail.
- Oaxaca Old Fashioned: Tequila (damn, I missed which kind!), Mezcal, sugarcane syrup, mole bitters. Friggin’ delicious.
- Negroni: Campari, Beefeater, Carpano Antica (or was it the Cocchi?). Mmmmm.
- Kingston Negroni: Cockspur 12 Rum, sweet vermouth, rhubarb bitters, tiki bitters. Sweet, molasses-y death.
- Shaken Vs Stirred. Tanqueray, served stirred and shaken side-by-side for comparison. Shaking not only makes it visibly cloudy, but also drastically numbs the flavors.
- Fernet Jelinek, tiny taste. Tastes like Christmas!
- Jägermeister. Yes, that’s right, we finished with a shot of Jäger. It’s his favorite. (He asked if we could guess his favorite, based on positioning in the bar. And sure enough, the thing that’s smack dab in the middle of the top shelf is a big old bottle of Jäger.) And actually, if you like bitter botanical digestivos, it’s pretty nice when it’s not ice-cold. Prost!
I like the way that the one picture here highlights how I often sit like a monkey.
Portraits In Deviance #19: 1schoolbuslover
When searching for images of interest on deviantart, one occasionally is sees something that begs the question: is this person for real. As near as I can tell, 1schoolbuslover is for real.
Now, she doesn’t seem to be a true mechanophile; that first image appears to be the only one of explicitly sexual content that I found on her profile. Still, these buses get into a lot of situations. Here’s the description of the image above, for example:
“his twin sister the night before chained him up and duct taped his mouth shut then ran away and later on killed her self and also said her goodbyes through there CB radios they have and as u can see tate isnt just upset hes really upset and gunna be depressed now while also being heartbroken, this is sooo sad”
That’s pretty real. Things got pretty real. But it’s not all bad news. The school buses can also have babies.
Or battle (sometimes they have tails, I think?)
Or be forcibly retired?
Now, 1schoolbuslover doesn’t just draw the lives and loves of anthropomorphic school buses, she’ll also draw the occasional anthropomorphic semi-truck. She’ll also sometimes draw realistic school buses, noting their various makes and models.
She’ll also just take photos of school buses or, most tellingly, a photo of her toy school bus collection.
That’s how I know it’s for real. The drawings could all easily be someone pretending to be in to school buses because it’s weird, but that collection represents a serious investment of cash. I don’t think you’d do that if you were faking. So I can confirm that, yes, that first image was indeed made by someone who wanted to see two school buses doing it doggy style. For that, 1schoolbuslover, you are a true deviant.

The stars are interruptions to the darkness of the night,
Intruding imperfections that the night cannot deny.
The lack of light invites a victim and a victim’s cry
To pierce its lonely suffocation, if only with a sigh.
Yes, it is the stars at night that give our hopes a home,
Suggesting with a little light that we are not alone.

The spread of the black death.
Poland
Poland, tell us your secret.
Poland is the
oldnew Madagascar. If I remember correctly, Poland’s secret is that the jews where being blamed all over europe (as usual) as scapegoats for the black plague. Poland was the only place that accepted Jewish refugees, so pretty much all of them moved there.
Now, one of the major causes of getting the plague was poor hygiene. This proved very effective for the plague because everyone threw their poop into the streets because there were no sewers, and literally no one bathed because it was against their religion. Unless they were jewish, who actually bathed relatively often. When all the jews moved to Poland, they brought bathing with them, and so the plague had little effect there.
Milan survived by quarantining its city and burning down the house of anyone showing early symptoms, with the entire family inside it.
I reblogged this tons of times, but the Milan info is new.
Damn Italy, you scary.
Poland: “Hey, feeling a bit down? Have a quick wash! There, you see? All better”
Milan: “Aw, feeling a bit sick are we? BURN MOTHERFUCKER, BURN!!!!!”
Also, this might have something to do with it: from what I understand, O blood type is uncommonly… common in Poland. Something to do with large families in small villages and a LOT of intermarriage. The black plague was caused by a bacterium that produced, in its waste in the human body, wastes that very closely mimic the “B” marker sugars on red blood cells that keep the body from attacking its own immune system. Anyone who has a B blood type had an immune system that was naturally desensitized to the presence of the bacterium, and therefore was more prone to developing the disease. Anyone who had an O type was doubly lucky because the O blood type means the total absence of ANY markers, A or B, meaning that their bodys’ immune system would react quickly and violently against the invaders, while someone with an A may show symptoms and recover more slowly, while someone with B would have just died. Because O is a recessive blood type, it shows in higher numbers when more people who carry the recessive genes marry other people who also carry the recessive gene. Poland, which has a nearly 700 year history of being conquered by or partnering with every other nation in the surrounding area, was primarily an agricultural country, focused around smaller, farming communities where people were legally tied to, and required to work, “their” land, and so historically never “spread” their genes across a large area. The economy was, and had been, unstable for a very long period of time leading up to the plague, the government had been ineffective and had very little reach in comparison to the armies of the other countries around for a very very long time, and so its people largely remained in small communities where multiple generations of cross-familial inbreeding could have allowed for this more recessive gene to show up more frequently. Thus, there could be a higher percentage of O blood types in any region of the country, guaranteeing less spread of the illness and moving slower when it did manage to travel. Combine this with the fact that there were very few large, urban centers where the disease would thrive, and with the above facts, and you’ve got a lovely recipe for avoiding the plague.
Interestingly enough, as a result from the plague, the entirety of Europe now has a higher percentage of people with O blood type than any other region of the world.
WHY IS THIS ALL SO COOL
When Tumblr teaches you more about the plague than 12 years of school ever did.
Just to throw a nod in, as a medieval historian, this is all credible, and is the leading theory as to the plagues effectiveness at this point. So. Enjoy your new knowledge!
I had some downtime so I decided to make myself a new set of dinnerware based on The Willow Pattern.
BRILLIANT
